Breakfast yesterday. I had corned beef hash and my husband had a BLT. The breakfast menu was not extensive and the portions were much smaller than you normally get at similar diners. I did enjoy my corned beef hash, which was homemade not canned but I don't see us ever going back even though it's within walking distance of our home. Overall, it was fine. The diner itself was clean and well kept, but cold. While we waited for our food, I held my husband's coffee cut to keep my hands warm.

For a Coney, this is as food as it gets! I grew up in the area and Athens was always the best and continues to be. I suppose I can only comment on the greek salad, chicken pita sandwhichs, fries, and swankie frankie because those are my staples.

Crapola... First wanted one of the advertised specials that they were offering.. A BBQ sandwich. They were out of BBQ meat? At dinner time, not like the place was busy... Got a regular coney no onion, it showed up and had onion... Told the waitress it was supposed to have no onion.... They scraped the onion off and gave it back? Really who does that?!? Wtf???

BEST CONEY ISLAND IN DETROIT. Yes, better than Lafayette & All American. I am her a couple times a week for just a dog & fries, but also a good breakfast menu. Staff is friendly and attentive. Great decor and atmosphere. One of my favorite lunch stops. Also, this place used to be a divey old building. When they built the new building, they did a 50's style diner car look. Many places I've been to that rebuild and 'upgrade' lose what it was that made them good in the process. Not here. Athen got even BETTER. One of my favorite places to go. been a customer for over 20 years and will be for 20 more.

Not a great diner with small portions. Went for breakfast - low quality bacon, undercooked hash browns, cold toast. It's hard to mess up eggs, so no issues there. Overall, there are much better options in the same price range.

Devastated! I knew something wasn't right when I didn't see Pete or Mark as soon as I walked in... the atmosphere was... different. Not good different like when they expanded and updated the place several years ago now. BAD different, like the first time you visit grandma's house after she's passed and there's no aroma of her cooking to hug you at the door. Morbid, I know - but that's the feeling! Full disclosure: I worked at Athens as a teenager and have been going ever since; I have a very sensitive palette for their menu so my opinion may be more biased than most. Yes, I still want to call out my order to the grill as "1 up no mustard" but now the staff there would probably just stare at me as though I was speaking Greek - which btw, WAS the roots of this Royal Oak landmark. Ok ok, on to the actual meals we had. Athens chicken pita, ordered old school with only chicken & cheese like they used to do - yuck! Different pitas are being used, chicken was way over seasoned & the cheese looked like a a couple of kraft singles they didn't take the time to melt (even though our order made it to the table in just under 20 minutes when back in the day you could order, eat & pay in that time). Kids got burgers which were fine, nothing special and the buns were obviously from a new vendor & looked more like whole grain Aunt Millies that you might buy for your turkey burgers at home. The biggest disappointment came when the last items made it to the table. And since when are the coneys the last thing to be served??? I remember when a plate of dogs were in front of you 2 minutes after ordering & we gladly waited a couple extra minutes for the FRESH, CRISPY fries to be delivered and the salt would stick to thanks to the oil still popping as they were set on the table. Those days are long gone folks! The fries - which I learned were switched with crinkle fries for a minute until the rioting in the booths got someone's attention - were awful... Luke warm, soggy and about half the size they used to be. Nothing worthy of dipping into the sides of the Athens chili and cheese we knew and loved. But guess what? The chili wasn't even worthy of the soggy fries! I almost cried right there at the table when the waitress presented the coneys & sides of chili/cheese. I could tell by the look & smell that this was not the Mitchell family recipe. At the very least, the same vendors are no longer being used. The onions were chopped so small they had zero crunch, the chili was a strange rust color with a completely different taste that nobody at the table enjoyed. I won't go into detail about the dogs themselves but for those familiar with the nostalgia of "where man bites dog" you should know there is no longer that SNAP that made them stand out above all the rest. Ballpark perhaps? As if dinner wasn't bad enough we tried to order dessert in hopes of getting the homemade rice pudding. Uhhh, no rice pudding? I've heard this before when they've run out. Petes wife would fully stock the cooler with her secret recipe cups of pudding but it flew off the shelves because the whole place would smell like warm pudding and no one could resist ordering a cup or two, even it meant taking it home because you had no room left after scarfing down the best high calorie meal you could ask for. But no, they did not run out. They no longer have it, ever... EVER!?!?! Wtf! This was when I started asking questions: why did they change everything, where's Pete & Mark, why did I feel like a stranger in a strange land??? BOOM! The place has been sold. New ownership. Some digging has led me to believe this is soon to be a Nicky D's location. Thanks but no thanks. I will never be back. A tear falls as I shake my fists in the air one last time... Goodbye Athen's, we had a good run :-(

Wow, best hot dogs I have ever had in my life. Never ending glass of Vernors for only $2, and complete with extraordinary cole slaw and a mountain of fries. Top it off with literally the most genuine and kind server (Lisa) that I have ever had the privilege of having, and the quaint and humble feel of the 1950's diner, and the result is Athens Coney Island. What an amazing place, definitely a must see.

I have been going to Athens Coney Island for 25 years. The original owners knew my Dad and I by name and the food was outstanding. So when I found out they sold, I had to stop by and check out the new operation. 1. I got a negative vibe from long time staff. I could tell they were not happy. 2. Switch from Red Gold to Heinz, I had to make a comment. These guy obviously are rookies. 3. Chili was different. Tasted like canned crap. 4. They added some stupid salt seasoning to the fries, I'm assuming Lawrys. Fries were super greasy and just not good. Why change an institution? If it's not broken, don't fix it. I am a lifelong customer who will be hitting up Hunter House more when I come to town. They lost my business.

Bacon: crisp. Sausage: thick. Ham: unnecessary. Eggs: lots. Hash browns: brown. Pancakes: savory and fluffy. Coney dog: yeah got that too. Listen up chumps, you crushing Woodward Ave? Then cruise your ass to Athens for all things American. Yeah I got the big breakfast, a short stack and a coney, but I'm about to have a big day and straight tear shit up around town so I need that good ass fuel you dig? Come in for the decor, stay for the food, be cool to the super sultry and classically beautiful diner waitress. Buddies, you don't come through here, you don't deserve a car. Motor city what up.

My friend and I hopped in this place prior to a concert and apparently it has changed ownership. She was disappointed to hear that her fave mac and cheese had been removed from the menu. I ordered up breakfast for dinner and it wasn't awesome. Eggs were overdone, my toast overdone, and my bacon pretty rubbery, though I asked for burnt. Our service was also pretty bad. She was pleasant enough, but more interested in checking her phone at the counter multiple times. We had told her we were on limited time, but that snapchat session must have been more important. I'm disappointed, I've been here before and it's a great little diner, great location, and formerly great food. I hope the new ownership steps it up a little.

I love Athens. It is by far my favorite coney in metro Detroit. I drive out of my way several times a month to go there. My extended family visits multiple times every time they come to town. When we have our annual 4th of July party we go and buy a gallon of their chili. We served them as late night snacks at my wedding for god sake. So you can imagine my horror when I was told the new owners will be dumping the home made chili for national Coney Island chilli. Oh yeah, national, the crappy chain in every town in Detroit. One step above Kerbys...if I wanted National I would go to the local one five minutes from my house instead of driving a half hour for Athens. Dear new owners you haven't been there long but you just lost a life long customer, I will make sure to let everyone I know there is no longer any reason to drive to Royal Oak. Way to screw it up in record time. It was said they may reconsider if enough people complain, I encourage everyone to do so.

Athens as we have known it is gone. So very sad. I have been going there since 1975 and now they have changed all the recipes to the cheapest ingredients. What a joke. For breakfast I used to get corned beef hash with hash browns. Now they use sliced potatoes instead of hash browns. Newsflash to whoever made that recipe change--it used to taste good and now it tastes bad. The potatoes are mushy, sour and bland. My wife and I had two coneys last night and they have changed the brand and style of hot dog to some artificial skinned hot dog that chewed like vinyl. At several points along the hot dog I could not chew it and well excuse the gross description (had to politely spit it into a napkin). The chili tastes like it comes out of a can. Keep serving crap like this and the new owners will be out of customers by Christmas. They have no clue what market they are in-- 14 and Woodward is not the place to serve canned chili and plastic vinyl hot dogs from the cheapest vendor. Here is a business opportunity for someone -- open an old style Athens nearby and you will get all of the ex-Athens customers for yourself.

This place epitomizes coney island mediocrity. At first look, it's a chromed out, old-school street car style diner. Visually, this place looks pretty cool. The wheels fall off the wagon shortly after this. After prefacing our meal with the waitress that we have tree nut and peanut allergies with our table guests, she said we were in good hands and to just stay away from the obvious menu items with nuts. Sounds knowledgeable. We order and the sandwiches all come plated with potato chips. I ask her if she knows if what kind of oil they are fried it and she didn't know. So she went to go look and she tells us they come from a generic bag with NO LIST OF INGREDIENTS ON THE BAG! Meal over for our guests. I had the Greek salad and the lettuce looked a little brown and wilted; definitely not a vibrant and fresh green. Dressing was good though. I've been here before for coneys and fries and they on par with most places. Nothing extraordinary and certainly not unique. GFS or US Foods all the way. Again, not bad but not great. When it comes to customer food sensitivities this place strikes out. I dub this carelessness. Most places have a binder with ingredients, Athens does not. With so many other coney/diners around town, I'll pass on ACI.

As a child of the 80s, I grew up with Athens. It was my first coney experience, so it's fair to say that all other establishments suffered in comparison. My parents make an annual trek to Michigan and it's understood that Athens will be a part of their visit. I was so disappointed with my latest trip this past August. When my coney arrived, I realized the chili was not the same. It was so bland and not special at all. I overheard the waitress say that it was under new ownership. Did the previous owners not give them their chili recipe? That is the only explanation of why they would ditch it for the Hormel equivalent. Seriously, what were they thinking? Definitely won't be back and it truly breaks my heart.

I go back and forth with this place. Sometimes it is good, other times it isn't. The service is hit or miss - there is one girl that finally got a pad of paper and now writes stuff down...before that she just forgot stuff all the time. Today I overheard her giving a girl a difficult time for wanting a turkey sandwich with bacon (I guess they charge $.60/slice...seems a bit rich). Silver lining I guess is that the waitress warned the girl. We went again today - if you just stick with the simple (coney, fries, pop) you are good. As soon as you deviate, you are asking for trouble. Today my husband got cheese fries and he said it was like a kraft single melted on fries. The rice pilaf that I ordered from my kid was super bland - it needed salt or something. Anyway, it is ok. Certainly if you are looking for a coney in Detroit, you should perhaps try another place.

Was excited to find a real diner based on their look, but it turned out to be basically a gimmick. Not a large menu at all and my corned beef hash was marginal. Good chocolate malt and pretty good service, but with other diners to try I probably won't be coming back. Sorry.

Love it! We are from KY and don't have places like this there. Although I grew up in Detroit, my son was with me and never had a CONEY like this! He was excited (he is 20 yrs old..lol) but loved the way the place looks and ordered the combo Coney and it didn't disappoint, it was great! The fries were cooked perfect, and tasty! Way better than steak and shakes fries! The waitress was super nice and when she asked about my accent and we told her about my dad in Beaumont - she was very sweet! Great food - great service - we loved our experience!

When In Detroit (B-ham) I do this place for coney dogs and fries. Great service, clean and just a good old short order restaurant. You want fancy, your in the wrong place. Coney dog, loose burger, eggs and bacon yep good spot!

They used to have the best macaroni and cheese, we went there frequently for it. Then they started making it with large shells, the first bite tastes like water after that it just taste like pasta , you can't even taste the wonderful cheese they use. I forgot they changed to the shells and went back for Mac n cheese, as soon as I was served I regretted ordering it, I asked the waitress for a half a cup of cheese I figured I'd take it home and try it later with added cheese, she brought over a take out cup and asked is this okay, I said yes. There was a charge on my bill for 7.99 and the cup was full, all I wanted was a small amount. I told my husband just forget it, we won't be back.

Great tasting coneys and fries! So glad you changed the fries back to close to the original. Chili recipe has a very slight change, but it's still excellent. Love Athens!

I have to say I have been going here for over 20 years..from when you used to have to wait outside to now with the bigger "diner feel" and it is still the same great chili and dogs. The ultimate combo with extra chili is still amazing and they always use a ton of chili. I've been to many coney places and your lucky to get enough to cover the hot dog. I wish I lived closer to go more often but still a great place for a coney.

The food was delicious, the spinach pie outstanding. Also, the coleslaw is the best in the area. The service was wonderful. We enjoyed the whole experience and will return soon for another relaxed meal.

The beau and I popped into Athens after taking a look at the horrific OHOP line on Boxing Day. Facing the prospect of starvation for an hour or driving for a half hour in search of a decent wait at our local haunts, we threw in the towel and ponied up to the gleaming silver 50s throwback of this coney island. I admit, it reminds me of a train car from McCarthy era, and I half expected to find rails under the stranded restaurant. As it's my first time, I was setting the bar about average. I wanted a good omelette and variety of breakfast options in a reasonable period of time. Despite there being a line, the hostess had us seated by the window in a booth in about five minutes. We proceeded to receive steady attention from one of the sweetest, most attentive, kindly servers I have met in my time in Detroit. She was there when we needed her and didn't hover. She had a sweet word for us, and her other customers, and she was just so damn frigging *nice*, in the best form of the word -- none of that George Carlin bitchiness here, I assure you -- that I wished she were my aunt just so I could spend more time in her bright, optimistic presence. If it were simply her I was rating the restaurant on, it'd be a solid five stars and then some. Athens is a pretty straightforward Coney I suppose. The menu is heavy on staples like hamburgers and hot dogs in a dozen different styles, baklava and rice pudding, and quaint descriptions for how tasty they are. A good breakfast can be had for $5. I settled on an omelet stuffed with all their veggies and some turkey, and pricing is done a la carte style, which does add up at $.50 per veggie item, and $.90 for meat or specialty stuff. The omelette showed up with marbled rye just in time for hunger pangs to be kicking in, and I had the shredded hash browns gone in probably two minutes flat. Well, I think they were good. The omelette was pretty tasty, if not quite as magnificently unusual as Fly Trap. Mind you, this is a Coney; it doesn't pretend to be of the same level or model that Toast or Fly Trap or other nommable breakfast sites in Ferndale are. I can appreciate that. Breakfast was served and satisfied a need in me, for a reasonable price, so I'm okay with that. I can't comment on cleanliness beyond the main dining area. Our booth was good, and if things were a little dated, I rather expected that. I didn't visit the washrooms, as I rarely do except in upscale places (too many heebie jeebies and seeing cockroaches in IHOP on Woodward did me in). But it seems a nice place, though not one I'd be stopping in at very regularly unless OHOP's lines continue to be astronomically long. Nomnomnom!

  • Jeff M.

Yep. Just as good as I remembered it. Chili cheese fries, coney dog, navy bean soup and the loose cheese burger are the best items on the menu. The chili cheese fries and coney dog are the best in Detroit. It's not even close.

This is hands-down one of my favorite restaurants of all time! I've been coming here since I was a kid (so has my dad!), and to this day, it's the standard by which I measure all hot dogs and chili-cheese fries. It's been years since I had been, but I was in town for a wedding this past weekend and stopped by to relive a bit of my childhood. I hadn't seen it since the expansion, but even though the restaurant got a facelift, it was still the same great service and amazing recipes I remember!

The fact that this place has an Hour Magazine "best of Detroit" sign hanging up is laughable. I have had much better quality food at the large Coney chains (Leo's, National, etc) I ordered a chicken pita that came with chips. I asked if I could pay extra for fries and she said "no, you can order a side of fries, but you must get the chips with the sandwich" How stupid. This chicken must have been overdone in the fryer because it was tough and very difficult to eat, yuck. Nothing we ordered was very good, it was not clean in there, dirty napkins all over the floor. I don't really know why anyone would eat here. We won't be back.

I love most diner food when I want greasy food, but this place is a notch above most others. I recommend ordering a malt with your meal...yum.

Wow, that was awful. The mac and cheese was brown tinged and stuck together. It was clearly old and reheated. Not the specialty they claim it to be. The lemon rice soup was okay, but also not fresh. The rice was mush. I've been here before and the food was never this bad. Very disappointed.

This week's Fancy Breakfast Thursday was at the Athens Coney Island on Woodward south of 14 Mile. When you pull up it's a blast to the past. If you're like me the days of diners are seen only in movies, but it's almost like a movie set itself. It looks like the diner Steve McQueen gets trapped in the movie "The Blob". Luckily, I don't think you'll have to run here to escape the Blob. You'll run here to eat the good food. I've been to ACI several times. I like the Macaroni and Cheese, the Garlic Fries and the Greek Salads. The food is all reasonably priced and fresh and tasty. It's pretty much the typical Greek Coney restaurant in the Detroit area but with better food. Also, there is a lot of interesting variety beyond the typical coney dog and gyro. For example, the Swanky Frankie is a hot dog wrapped in bacon. One highlight is that ACI serves Strawberry Fanta! And breakfast is served anytime. Also, the dessert is really good. If you get dessert get the cinnamon roll covered with ice cream and Sanders hot fudge. It's huge and delicious, inexpensive and big enough to share. So if you want some comfort food and trip back to a 50s diner, run to Athens Coney Island. You will not be disappointed.

The food is fine. Actually, it's more than fine coney fare. The issue is with the wait staff. It seems like this problem crops up fairly often with me, so I always need to take a step back and see if I'm the real problem. I've had a little time to review it and I'm laying the blame squarely on the wait staff. They are extremely unpersonable, crossing over into rude. At first I thought it was just a lack of personality all around, but it's deeper than that. It may seem like you're doing me a favor by waiting on me, Athens Staff, but it's your job, one that you're paid for and you're tipped at the very least 20% of my total bill for doing. Shitty attitudes and above mediocre food would not lead me to recommend this place for dine in service.

Athens are definitely a home town favorite. Their unique selling propositions are their chili and their location. The chili has very good consistency and flavor. They are located on historic Woodward Avenue which makes for great car watching in the summer months. They serve consistent quality, fast and friendly. They will build your order any way you prefer without hesitation. Great coneys and now a whole lot more.

Good Coney Island. I ordered the greek salad with chicken which was actually very good. I've had it at other Coneys and the chicken was just nasty. Not sure why you need a whole vat of dressing on the side but to each his own. Mom had the gyro and really liked it. Waitress was very friendly and attentive.

Well I didn't think it was possible for a Coney place to screw up breakfast but alas I was wrong. Stopped in for a late breakfast last Sunday and was completely underwhelmed. My french toast was ok but had large bits of cooked eggs hanging off of it. (sloppy cooking) My bacon was basically 2 slices of petrified wood. Seriously, it was so dry and overcooked that I almost broke a crown trying to chew it. My husband was irritated that the omlets are priced a-la carte style meaning you pay for everything extra outside of the eggs. After he added a few typical omlet ingredients, his omlet was almost 6 dollars! The corned beef hash was dry and unusual looking - corned beef was not cubed but shredded so the hash looked more like loose hash browns with shredded meat thrown in. Very odd. I won't be eating here ever again.

The best Coney Islands in the world are here in Michigan. The norm is National Coney Island, the best of the best are Lafayette and American downtown (which are right next to each other) Pros: Better than National Coney Island. The dogs are high quality, they definitely are the highlight. Fries are great, they are on the thin side which is what I personally prefer. Coca Cola: good syrup/soda and ice mix consistency ( can't stand a watery, flat Coke) Service is prompt, they are working in there. Nice building, cool diner look. Cons: The small chili fries are a really small portion. The chili is fine but slightly tinny. Not as good as Lafayette or American Coney Island. 4.25 stars One of the best

I did not eat here but I took my wife and she enjoyed it. Our waitress was very nice and attentive. Food came quickly and my wife enjoyed it. She had a coney dog and the cinnamon roll sundae. The coney was good but unremarkable and the cinnamon roll sundae was very good, but she wished the cinnamon roll was a little warmer (if that's possible when it's topped with ice cream). I'm sure we'll be back and we'd like to try their breakfast as well.

They have good coney dogs. I usually go here and get a coney when I go back and visit the area. But in some ways the place has gotten too big for its britches. Example: Overpriced! Tried breakfast one morning and they make this big deal about their omelettes- like alot of restaurants do. Ooooooh- your lucky Mr. Customer- we are going to fold over your scrambled eggs with some bacon and cheese inside and charge you lots of money cuz it is an OMELETTE! Folks- eggs cost about 6 cents each for a restaurant- then they throw in a little crumbled bacon and cheese and charge you 6 bucks? Uh- I don't think so. STICK WITH THE CONEYS.

Athens Coney is starting to feel like a new friend. I still want to find out more about it. So far, everything I have eaten has been great. I had a loose meat hamburger, coney fries, corned beef hash, spinach pie, navy bean soup and breakfast. Everything has been really tasty. The food comes out in a timely fashion and looks great. The spinach pie I was awesome - crispy phyllo outside with tender spinach and feta inside. Yum! Each time, I have had a different waiter or waitress. They have all been helpful and even kind. I plan on going back very soon!

I have been a customer here for at least 15 years and have always stopped here for reliable coney island fare. For the past 6 - 12 months I have noticed it is increasingly dirty. Today the waiter I had looked dirty too. Floors, bathrooms, no longer clean. Has there been a management change? Not too eager to go back.

I don't do hot dogs. But if breakfast anytime is what you are looking for than this is the best diner to hit up within a couple of miles if only because it looks so cool. Portions are diner huge but the food is pretty ordinary. Where are the Woodward diners that cook from scratch?

We had lunch there on a Saturday in 7/07. That place is incredibly popular, so we had to wait (a short time) for a table. It was also very noisy, and we were annoyed by the "strolling magician" who kept bothering us (the last part is meant *literally*). The floor could also have used a good washing. Aside from all of that, the food was delicious (I had a spinach pie and we shared a piece of peanut butter/chocolate fudge pie). Our server was absolutely *terrific*; truly one of the most pleasant and friendly servers we've ever encountered.

The Hot Dog in Detroit is like no other! I had hot dogs all over the states and the one's from Detroit coney's are the BEST of the BEST! If you have never eaten one then start today, if you haven't had one in a while then get one today! The combo with lose meat, chili, mustard, and onions plus chili fries, what better I ask you? I moved to the North Woodward area in the early 70's, and fell in love with Athen's. I moved out of state a long time ago, but ever time I'm back Athen's is a must stop. The place has gone through a major remodel (I like the old place better) and is know a landmark for the area. The food has not changed which is the best part. You gotta get here! As Detroit has changed over the years the one think that has stand the march of time are the Coney Islands, yes you have to include the ones downtown American Coney Island and Lafayette Coney Island the same product but they are different unto to their own,YOU HAVE TO TRY THEM BOTH!!! God Bless Detroit!!!! Remember to eat well and live well and please no chains!

Well this is a solid coney joint. I loves me some coneys and this place does coney justice. It also has the standard menu item and much much more. They had soup specials which my fiances dad had and said was great. We both got coneys and were very pleased, good tasting dog with a satisfying snap. Chili good, onions check mustard of course. I also ordered the chili cheese fries. They were tasty but I am not the biggest fan of the type of cheese they use, kinda milky/creamy but no worries it was still good enough for me to eat and hey you may like the cheese it just not for me. I also ordered a shake a chocolate shake. It was advertised on the menu as AMAZING! But it was actually so so. I actually like the ones at steak n shake better. But all in all I will be back to athens coney island. Check this place out.( I also heard from a buddy that they have an amazing cinnamon roll dessert which i am looking forward to trying.)

I know american-lafayette coney island is concidered the best coneys in detroit, but I haven't been there since he early 1990's when some thugs walked through latenight and screamed "what's the matter haven't you people ever seen black people. 5 minutes later a brick was thrown through the window. Next best thing, athens. I think the original building had more charm, but the product is the same. Dogs have great snap, great chili. Learned a lesson, don't go to athens and get your chloresterol checked.

The smaller place used to be more authentic and cooler. The new place is shiney but the service is not so great. They want you in and out, which is no stretch for a coney island, but not in the same way as like Lafayette Coney Island. Order the loose burger and fries, forget those meat tubes...

This coney is shaped like one of those old Winnebagos that look like silver Twinkies. What else could you want? The guts of this Twinkie are put together fairly well. I didn't feel like I had to wear gloves or constantly spray Purell on my hands while dining. (not that I'd do that even if the place was a real mess... I just wouldn't go there.) They have a pretty standard menu, without some of the more exotic foods that you'd find at a coney (if you could even say foods are exotic if they're found on the National coney menu. Let's say ethnic foods) but I don't seem to mind. They make a pretty solid burger that's a lot better than National's. No smoking inside. And a huge parking lot that's usually pretty empty. I think the last time we were here there was one other customer. That's kind of strange, but then again, it was 3pm so it sort of makes sense. I can't think of any place around Athens that is as cheap. If you're looking to grab a quick lunch and want a sit-down place instead of fast food, this would definitely be the place to go.

Just visited the Detroit area for the first time. For the longest time I have wondered what you are supposed to eat when visiting Detroit. I have heard that Middle Eastern food is good, but what about the all-American greasefest you can find in most great American cities. KC has BBQ, Chicago has their deep dish, and Indiana has their pork tenderloin. But what oh what did Detroit add to the culinary fabric of America? Fortunately for me, I was being shown around by a local who shared with me Athens Coney Island. I went straight for the two coney dogs smothered in Chili with fries. No, Detroit did not invent the hot dog, but they sure have found a way to serve it. Unlike Chicago style hot dogs, chili dogs can be found pretty much anywhere (I never order them in NYC though), but these were some of the best ever. Try em if you are ever in Royal Oak.

In my opinion...The best coney's outside of Lafayette. I loved the chili fries. Ask for heavy chili, they can be a little stingy. Chili is spiced perfect.

Athen's Coney Island is a beautiful, beautiful thing. It is another of the places I have to go when I go home to visit mom and dad. It's not quite the cozy awesome-ness that it used to be when there were only 8 tables and a line out the door, but the place is still amazing with it's shiny new-ness. The coney dogs are still awesome, as are the fries. I honestly can't comment on anything else, because in the 20 some years of going there, I don't think I, or anyone else I've been with, have ever ordered anything else. You can go for the carry out option, but somehow the hot dog to chili ratio is not as perfect when you try to do it at home. I have no logical explanation for the ridiculous amount of coney dog places in southeast Michigan, but if you are trying to decide among the many options, you should definitely stop at Athens.

I have been going to Athens since I was born-I literally grew up as the diner grew from 25 seats to over 100. I remember spinning on the blue bar stools while waiting for my hot dog with no bun, no mustard, no chili. I remember Pete's face when I ordered my first hot dog with chili on the side and then, years later, when I finally graduated to a coney (on a pita). I proudly own a "where man bites dog" t-shirt. When I went away to college I would come home at Thanksgiving and want to head immediately to Athens. While my mother is an excellent cook, Athens was what I wanted- the friendly atmosphere, the staff I had known for years, Mark sitting at the corner table doing the ordering for the next week. I would bring a friend home with me and we would go there because, duh, we needed to. It was comfort food at its finest. As a part of my post-grad life I do not get to come home often, but we still make a stop at Athens. However, my most recent trip home caused many a tear. First of all, my family went on a Thursday night and the place was dead-bad sign number 1. Then we sat down and were greeted with new menus, but no matter I hadn't needed a menu to order in years. I wanted a coney with light onions on a pita instead of a bun with a small chili fry on the side. "We don't do small fries anymore and I can't put your hot dog in a pita but I can give you a pita on the side." Okay- this is fine. The chili was not the same, the pita didn't have a hundredth of the yummy grilled texture, and the hot dog was mushy. It was like popping a balloon in my face. It was awful, I could only take two bites and had to stop. As mentioned in other posts, the fries were also terrible. This was a place that I loved, loved, loved. I fully intended to have the after party food from my wedding catered from here so that Mark and Pete could stop by and say hello. But sadly that place is gone and a chain has arrived. They should change the name-it is insulting to call this place Athens Coney Island.

For a coney, this place is legit. I like the convenient location on Woodward & the fairly unique interior. My daughter loves eating up at the counter. I've had breakfast and lunch here and there are decent menu items. Super cheap breakfast specials from 8-11, weekdays. Yummy buttermilk pancakes. Good salads and soups for lunch. I've not tried lots if items on the menu, but I'd expect they'd be as good quality and taste. Service is fine--nothing spectacular. But what is, nowadays? :/
